Congressional Candidate Kia Hamadanchy Statement on Trump Administration’s Decision to Pull Out of the Iran Deal

IRVINE, CA—Congressional Candidate Kia Hamadanchy, a Democrat running in California’s 45th Congressional District, released a statement on the Trump Administration’s withdrawal from JCPOA.

“Today’s disastrous decision by the Trump Administration to pull out of the Iran Deal jeopardizes any chance of stability in the region and could put us back on the path to war with Iran.

The Iran Deal was working and Iran was in full compliance with IAEA’s strict verification and monitoring.  The primary objectives of this deal were preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and averting a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.  Because the deal provided for robust inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities we know that it was succeeding in its main goals.

The United States, after the withdrawal from JCPOA, is now at odds with our closest allies in Europe.  Principled leaders like Chancellor Merkel and President Macron strongly advised Donald Trump against pulling out of the JCPOA because they knew that the consequences of doing so could be disastrous.  Instead the President listened only to the advice of warmongers like John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, and Benjamin Netanyahu.

With one stroke of a pen, Donald Trump has thrown away a chance to pursue real change in the Middle East.  Instead of a path to peace he has made war much more likely. He has empowered hardliners in Iran and the economic sanctions he has re-imposed will do more to hurt everyday working people in Iran than the ruling regime.  This withdrawal also makes it significantly less likely that North Korea will ever agree to a deal with the United States when they know just how easily it can be undone. It is a sad day for the United States, it is a sad day for those who truly want a peaceful Middle East, and it is a sad day for a world that has always expected the United States to help lead the way.

Kia Hamadanchy was born and raised in Irvine, California, the son of Iranian immigrants. If elected, he would be the first Iranian American elected in the history of Congress. He’s a former legal counsel to US Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH).
